ATTENTION STUDENTS AND PARENTS---IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT School Seal

We have recently had numerous discipline incidences involving students bringing vapes/oils/and other related paraphernalia to school.  While many adults have had success in using vapes to help them quit smoking, these items are illegal for children to have and will not be allowed on campus.  The problem is primarily at the middle school level, but this message is for all students, regardless of age.

CES Receives New Artwork

Several classrooms and the cafeteria received some exciting updates over Christmas Break. The cafeteria wall was airbrushed with the Trojan House Crests. The crests really seem to come alive with some excellent painting skills. Mrs. Leonard's classroom feels as though you are walking into a galaxy far, far away. Her theme is Star Wars, and you will be amazed by the artwork. Mrs. Eldridge chose a sports them for her room. Many different sports are vividly represented. You can even shoot some hoops if you are lucky. Please check out our "Photo Gallery" for some pictures.

Clarifying Information CCS Seal

Just to clarify information, I wanted to post what occurred at school today. At approximately 1:30 this afternoon we had a report that there had been a shooting in Wallaceville and the shooter had left the scene.  We were also given a description of the vehicle.  There was no indication which direction the suspect was headed, but to take every precaution, we decided to cancel outside recess and break for students.  We still had one more class-change at the middle school, but administrators were outside and checking the area before students were released to their next class.  We were never in a true lock down situation---it was a “soft lockdown”—basically school continued as usual, but students were not allowed outside the building.

Butter Braid Reward Day

The morning was anything but typical here at C.E.S. The top Butter Braid sellers for each homeroom got to throw a pie at either Mr. Sikes or Mrs. Cassell. I have to say we have some students with a really accurate aim in our school. Mrs. Cassell was happy Mr. Sikes took the brunt of the pie throwing though. The students that sold 10 or more Butter Braids enjoyed an inflatable party today as well. Check out all of the pictures in the Photo Gallery.

She is an amazing young lady, and we are very proud of her. Kylee Dockery sold 57 Butter Braids and raised $812. She will get to go on a shopping spree with a $100 gift card. Grandparent's Day Parking

In order to better serve our visitors on Grandparent’s Day, we will be providing a bus to shuttle Grandparents back and forth Friday morning. Since we have limited parking available on our campus, we are asking that you either park only in a true parking space or park at the GLHS softball/baseball fields near the Helicopter Park. A shuttle bus will be provided.

In order to provide this service, we must keep both lanes of the horseshoe open so that we can accommodate the bus coming in and out the parking lot.  Feel free to drop off any guests at the front door and park somewhere else, but please do not leave your car parked in the horseshoe area unless you are in a designated parking area.

Eclipse Information CCS SEAL

Parents,

Chickamauga City Schools will be following a half day schedule Monday, August 21, in an effort to ensure the safety and well-being of students.  While we have enjoyed activities and studying about the eclipse, we will dismiss students early so they can safely travel home before the eclipse begins.  The peak of the eclipse, when we will have 98% darkness, is during the regular dismissal time.  We want to avoid exposing students to driving at that time.  We have provided safety information about watching the eclipse, and stressed that looking at the eclipse without protective eye gear can cause permanent damage to the eyes.  Additionally, regular sunglasses will not protect your eyes from the danger of the eclipse.  This is a once in a lifetime event, but we strongly advise watching it on television rather than taking a chance on damaging your vision for a lifetime.

Peanut Free Zone

Due to nut allergies in our school, students are not allowed to bring anything containing nuts or peanut butter in their lunch boxes. Also, items containing nuts are not allowed in the classroom, including candy and snacks. This takes effect immediately. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. If you have any questions, you can contact your child's teacher.

Summer Reading Projects

Summer reading projects are due Friday, August 18th. Students may complete two different projects or one project and dress up as their favorite character or scene from another book. There will be a contest to judge students on their costumes. One student from each grade level will win a $25 gift card to Barnes & Noble. Students will receive a grade for the two book projects.

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS FOR 2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR CCS SEAL

School for students will begin Wed., August 9. Construction is ongoing at Gordon Lee High School. Students will be unable to park in the horseshoe drive until sometime in September. The construction will also affect students who walk to CES and GLMS through the alley between GLHS and the Gordon Lee Mansion. We are encouraging CAR-POOLING for student drivers whenever possible, and we ask the community to be keenly aware that many children will be walking from different areas to school each morning. We will have staff members supervising, and also assistance from the Chickamauga City Police Department, but EXTREME CAUTION is warranted.

Below is a detailed plan for student parking, parent drop-off and pick-up, and student walkers. This plan may be tweaked if needed, but any updates will be posted immediately. Please click "Read More" to view entire message.

The Little Red Caboose

As many of you have probably noticed, the CES caboose received a new paint job over the summer. Once again our train car is looking good with its bright red paint. The caboose is used by different classes throughout the school year. Also, some of our reading volunteers take groups to read in the caboose. The caboose has heat which allows it to be utilized during the winter months. With the lack of air conditioning, we are limited to the times of the year we can use the caboose. Our PTO submitted a grant to Lowe's in the fall which would fund the installation of an air conditioning unit for the caboose. I am thrilled to inform you the PTO received the Lowe's grant, and an air conditioner will be installed soon! We are very thankful for all of our PTO parents that worked on the grant. We will have a ribbon cutting ceremony in the spring, and we hope you will be able to join us.

Message from Superintendent Day:

Since the weather is soooo hot and also since we are going to have to park our high school students at Dan McNally Field for the first month or so of school and have them walk over to the high school, I have decided to allow students to wear shorts to school (and staff to wear no ties) until Oct. 7 which will be the last day of school before Fall Break.  I do not intend to surpass our typical practice of wearing shorts til Labor Day next year---just this one time due to the inconvenience of the construction.
Thanks,
Superintendent Day

Chick-fil-A, Hot Shots, CES PTO, and Allstate-the Dendy Agency each made a contributation to help fund the trip for all the students at CES. For many of our students, this was their first trip to SuperFly, and fun was had by all. CES students and even a few teachers enjoyed the trampolines, foam pits, and the trapeze. Thank you again to all of our sponsors!

Please check out our SuperFly pictures under the "Photo Gallery" Link.

A message from Superintendent Day:

I want to personally thank the citizens of Chickamauga for taking the time to vote on the school bond issue—whether you voted yes or no.  There was a large turnout which indicates the voters were engaged, and I feel confident the outcome of the election is representative of the desire of the majority of the community.  I do feel the appropriate decision has been made to ensure our school system has a long future, and our students have safe, secure facilities that are efficient and effective.  Although there is tremendous emotion associated with this decision, I think it was made by asking, “What is best for the students?”  If we do that, I think we are always doing the right thing.

Georgia Milestone Test Dates

Dear Parents,

The Georgia Milestones Assessment System (Georgia Milestones) is a comprehensive summative assessment pro?gram spanning grades 3 through high school.  Georgia Milestones measures how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in the state-adopted content standards in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.  At the elementary level, students in grades 3 through 5 will take an end-of-grade assessment in each content area.

Our test dates, for this year are as follows:

Wednesday, April 13th                English Language Arts Sections 1 and 2

Thursday, April 14th                    English Language Arts Section 3

Tuesday, April 19th                     Math Sections 1 and 2

Wednesday, April 20th               Science Sections 1 and 2

Thursday, April 21st                    Social Studies Sections 1 and 2

You always do a great job with helping students do well on these tests by making sure that they are well rested and have a good breakfast on testing days.  These assessments are just one additional way that we continually assess our students’ progress and then use that information to help direct their continued learning.  If you have any additional questions, feel free to call me or your child’s classroom teacher.

Sincerely,

Beth Guthrie

School Test Coordinator

Tuition Rate for 2016-2017 School Year

The Board of Education has set the tuition rate for the 2016-2017 school year.  Out of city Georgia residents will pay $800 per student with a family maximum of $2,400.  The Board strives to keep the tuition rate in line with what a Chickamauga city resident will pay in property taxes for an average home.  Last summer the millage rate was raised to 14.25 mills so that the school system would not lose state equalization funding, but at that point in time the Board opted not to change the tuition rate a month before school started.  This increase will balance the county tuition rate to approximate the increase in property taxes the city residents received last year.  Hopefully, the advance notice of an increase for the upcoming school year will allow families the opportunity to budget their finances accordingly.  Tuition must be paid in full before students are allowed to attend any classes.

Parent Engagement Month in Georgia

November is Parent Engagement Month in Georgia. It’s a time for all parents to consider how they can get more involved in their children’s education. Want to know what makes a huge difference in your child’s education? You do and so does every parent that gets involved and stays connected. It doesn’t matter where you are, on the scene at school or behind the scenes at home, your participation is a crucial part of your child’s success. Schools understand that parents are busy people, but there are many different ways you can get involved in your child’s academic achievement. No matter how little or how much time you have, there are many ways you can positively impact your child’s education at school and at home. Remember, when parents get involved and stay involved, all students achieve at higher levels. Click the link below for parent resources.

GaDOE Seeks Feedback on Science, Social Studies Standards

August 12, 2015The Georgia Department of Education is seeking public feedback as it conducts a review of the Science and Social Studies K-12 standards. After this process is complete, the new standards will be implemented in the 2017-18 school year.?

Click here to provide input on the current standards. This is a user-friendly, brief survey for professionals, parents and families, community members, students, and others.

“Educators have already given us valuable feedback on the current standards, and we wanted to make sure the public had a chance to weigh in as well,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “I’m committed to ensuring guaranteed, viable standards – standards that are appropriate and fully vetted. That can’t be done without input from all education stakeholders.”

Responses to this survey will be added to the educator responses and will be considered when Working Committees draft the revised standards.

The deadline to submit responses is September 15 at midnight EST.

Harlem Wizards Work Their Magic on C.E.S. Staff

On May 20 the C.E.S. staff and the Harlem Wizards met center court for a "little round ball face-off".  With their wizardry moves and slam dunk style, the Wizards made quick work of the staff. Even with emergency back-up from a few students, the teachers were too long gone to be revived. In the end the home team was defeated, but every one would agree the Wizards made defeat seem sweet.  They were so gracious and stayed until the very last student received an autograph or snapped a picture.

Everyone looks forward to seeing the Wizards again!

To culminate the study of some of America's greatest historical figures, Mrs. Kythas and Mrs. Davis lead their 3rd grade reading students in the production of a Wax Museum.  From Paul Revere to Rosa Parks the students spent hours perfecting speeches and costumes to showcase their special figure who shaped our history.  We were so proud of all the students!  WTVC of Chattanooga did a feature story on their website and WDEF will be featuring our students on John Mercer's "What's Right With Our Schools" on May 12. Be sure to be watching for these students.  Like the Great Americans they represented, they are destined for GREATNESS!!!!

Renaissance: Students Get BIG News About BIG TOP

Students enjoyed their 3rd nine week's Renaissance on Friday, April 4.  It was a great celebration of Honor and Star Roll, Perfect Attendance and Good Character.  Along with the regular antics of "Stinky the Clown" students also were treated to the "Chick-fil-a Cow" with his very own "Professional Clown Attorney."  With a "Moo-ving" appeal to treat the students to their very own circus if they do their best on their state testing, Mr. Sikes was persuaded "by a nose" (several red noses to be exact...) to honor students' hard work with the first ever Chick-fil-a C.E.S. Circus. As the contract was signed, a student representative pledged the students commitment to work hard on the CRCT along with parents and teachers who pledged their confidence and support. We know the students will work hard, so be watching on May 23 for a circus celebration!  A special thanks to Chick-fil-a for their support of our students as they serve as our corporate sponsor for this event. Go out and "Eat More Chicken!!!"

Technology Enhancements at C.E.S.

This has been a year of technology enhancements at Chickamauga Elementary.  Beginning with the addition of bandwidth, we became capable of adding more devices.  Next came the addition of expanded wireless capabilities throughout the building. Finally we were able to actually place devices in the hands of our students through profits from Book Fairs, fundraisers, and most recently a gift of $10,000 from our P.T.O which was used to purchase Microsoft Surfaces. These Surfaces have been a great addition combining the conveniences of a tablet and capabilities of a laptop into one.  They even provide students with USB capabilities making saving data and connecting to devices easy for all students.

We are very excited that whole classrooms throughout our building can simultaneously access research and educational websites. Thanks so much to our parents and community for your support of programs that make such technology a reality for our students.

C.E.S. Track Team Attends First Track Meet

After only a few short weeks of practice, Mr. Crowder and the C.E.S. Track Team made a great showing at their very first track meet.....some sweeping events winning first, second, and third place!  The meet was held Saturday, March 22  at L.F.O. High School.  There were representatives from schools throughout Walker and Catoosa county.  We were very proud of all our students' hard work and good sportsmanship.  We appreciate Mr. Crowder and Mrs. Sikes practicing with our students and giving up their Saturday morning for the children.  A special thanks to all the parents who attended the meet with their students.  Without your supervision we would not be able to participate in such events.

Kindergarten Makes Us All Proud to Be Americans!

"Hats off"  and a big SALUTE to our kindergartners, their teachers and paraprofessionals.  They did a tremendous job with their patriotic program for PTO.  From their outstanding singing and flag waving guest such as Abe Lincoln and Uncle Sam, it was a heart-warming performance. You are to be commended for all your hard work!  Thanks sooooooo much!

*Check the photo gallery for photos of the evening. If you have any photos from the evening you'd like to submit for the website, email them to teresa.guffey@glschools.org.

Perfect Pastries for Parents

There are many things that make C.E.S. a special place to grow and learn, but one of the greatest has to be our parental involvement!  We are so blessed to have the most wonderful parents!  It was such a terrific site to see so many parents enjoying the day with their students.  We truly appreciate the parents taking out of their busy schedules to create special memories with their children. A special "Thanks" goes out to the PTO for sponsoring this event.

Thank you, Parents for all you do!

"Yo Quiero Libros!"- Family Literacy Night Fiesta

It was a night of Fiesta Fun at C.E.S.Literacy Night as parents and students enjoyed everything from salsa to websites!!!  Families explored ways to make enhancing their reading skills lots of fun.  With Mrs. Blaylock, Mrs. Burdette, and Mrs. Hart making words and sounding out new words  was as easy as playing a game!  Mrs. Cassell and Mrs. Catlett had everyone really "sinking their teeth" into writing with delicious chips and salsa.  If all that wasn't enough, Mrs. Heiden and Mrs. Sweeton pulled out all the stops with IPAD fun as the students enjoyed a scavenger hunt activity and learned all about the school website. To wrap up the whole night, Clifford the Big Red Dog was on hand to meet, greet and make pictures with everyone.  What a night of fun and excitment!

*Visit the Photo Gallery for pictures of all the night's fun!

Valentine's Dance

The PTO held its "Mother- Son & Father- Daughter Dance" on Friday, February 8.  From the beautiful decorations to the beautiful dates, it was a great night!  Visit our Photo Gallery to pictures of the evening.  If you have pictures you'd like to share, email pictures to teresa.guffey@glschools.org  to have them placed on the website.

Book are Really WEARING on 3rd Grade

The third grade reading classes (Kythas and Coulter) had to do book reports, but with a twist. They had to read a book and write a book report on a t-shirt. We challenged them to add as many pictures and details as possible filling the whole shirt and making it fun to look at! They wrote summaries, list of characters, setting, author and title! They turned out great and they had a blast making them! When they were complete the classes visited other reading classes and became walking book reports! (Visit the "Photo Gallery" for more photos !!)

"Get Gutsy" with Renaissance and Good Character

Renaissance began as normal....recognizing Star and Honor roll followed by Perfect Attendance and Good Character t-shirts...BUT....things took an exciting turn as "Gutsy the Fox" came on the scene presenting his very own Good Character t-shirt and wowing the crowd with his antics. The day went on to get even better as "Gutsy" came back after lunch to share his inspiring Anti-bullying message and his slam dunk skills. I'm sure everyone will remember "Gutsy's" message and will have the guts to stand up for what is right and put an end to Bullying!!!

*Be sure to visit the Photo Gallery for a picture of the Good Character T-Shirt winners and all the fun with Gutsy.

P.T.O. filled with Fifth Grade Fitness Fun

P.T.O. turned into a night of fitness and fun as the fifth grade students provided everyone with a variety of fitness ideas to make getting healthier a lot of fun!  Everyone at the PTO meeting would have to agree the students' talent and energy was quite impressive. From hula hooping, dancing, gymnastics, jump-roping, and even karate, students showcased creative ways your favorite songs can inspire fitness.

As part of the "Georgia Shape" program, students at C.E.S. participate in activities daily that are designed to make Georgia students the healthiest they can be. Coupled with "Fitnessgram" activities, the program challenges the students to strive for 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. For more information on "Georgia Shape" and "Fitnessgram" as well as family tips to make fitness a family affair, visit georgiashape.org.

A special thanks goes out to all the students who participated in the P.T.O. program and to the fifth grade teachers, Mr. Dunfee, Mr. Houston, Mr. McDaniel and Mr. O'Neal. They certainly helped us all to learn that the road to a healthier lifestyle doesn't need a lot of fancy equipment or health clubs. All you need is a little motivation and imagination.

(Be sure to visit the "photo gallery" for pictures of all the fun!)

ButterBraid Reward- A Big Hit (literally!)

When we say the ButterBraid Reward was a big hit, we really mean it!  Top sellers in each homeroom were given the choice to hit Mr. Sikes or Mrs. Guffey with a pie.  Everyone would agree it was a lot of fun....even Mr. Sikes and Mrs. Guffey! Students who sold 10 or more ButterBraids were also treated to an inflatable party. What a fun day!  Thanks to all the families who supported our ButterBraid Fundraiser.

James Cameron “Camo” Scroggins

Cameron Scroggins

October 15, 1997-December 7, 2013

It is always difficult to lose a family member or friend, but when the person is so young and full of potential, it is especially devastating. Cameron was truly a role model for all. He gave only his best effort, was good and kind to all, and was unwavering in his faith.

Cameron was a true Trojan! The strength he exhibited throughout his lengthy illness was amazing, and he faced death with a calm and confident attitude. He told everyone that he didn’t want them to cry for him and that he was ready to go. He knew without a doubt he would be in a better place and no longer in pain. In his own words Cameron said,

“God has a bigger purpose for me.”

Let us all strive to emulate the qualities of this special young man. He will live on in our hearts and memories and is a true inspiration.

Cameron Scroggins will never be forgotten!

CONGRATULATIONS, STUDENTS!!!

"Trick or Treat" turns into a Real Treat! With the threat of rain looming overhead, the decision to cancel the walk downtown to "Trick or Treat" area merchants was a difficult call to make.  But within minutes of receiving the news and the invitation to move trick or treating to the school, local merchants lined the hallways to share in the day's fun.  It has been said many times that the school is the heart of our community, but on this Halloween, the community was definitely the heart of our school! There are not enough words to fully thank the merchants for their generous treats and kindness.  Thanks so much for helping make this day so special!

Students Enjoy First Renaissance of 2013-14 School Year Students at CES celebrated good grades, good attendance and good character on Friday, October 25 with its first Renaissance of the 2013-14 school year. It is fair to say "Trojan Pride was school wide" with the GLHS football team, cheerleaders, and band joining in on the fun.  "Stinky the Clown" was also on hand to share his antics.  Students were treated to corn toss games and football throws against their teachers with the students emerging victorious....Sorry, teachers!!! Lunch was also served "tailgate style" with games and even more fun.  The reward of the day was attending the GLHS pep rally.  Congratulations students for all your accomplishments.

We'd like to say a special "Thank You" to our Renaissance Sponsors:  Bank of Chickamauga, North Georgia Trucks and Parts, LLC, Chocolate Therapy Cafe, and the Gordon Lee Memorial High School Alumni Association and Foundation.  Without the support of our generous community, programs such as this would not be possible.

Fall Festival "Bucking" Success From the classroom booths, concession stand and giant inflatables to the  fantastic auction items....and let's not forget the bucking mechanical bull.... the 2013 Fall Festival proved to be one of the best festivals yet! I think it would be hard to find anyone who did not have a wonderful time.   With just enough "nip" in the air to make it really seem like fall, you could feel the excitiment and hear the shrill sounds of fun and enjoyment. A special thanks to festival chairman, Danielle Carswell and the team of PTO officers for all their hard work and to the parents who worked classroom games  and created auction items.  We'd also like to thank our "High School Helpers" who gave up their Saturday evening to supervise the inflatables. Be sure to look for pictures in the "photo gallery."  If you have any photos you'd like to contribute to the website, simply email them to teresa.guffey@glschools.org.

Celebrating Reading with Summer Reading Project and Dress-Up Day!

We always seem to take time to celebrate holidays and cheer on our favorite sports' teams, but today at C.E.S. we made time to celebrate the love of reading and the treasure of a good book. With projects in hand or dressed as their favorite book or book character, the students filled the hallways with excitement.  Even the teachers joined in on the fun as many shared a slight resemblance to a few well known story book characters!  The day's events included classroom judging to reveal the top 2 costume finalist from each homeroom, a grade level competition to crown a grade level winner and finally a hallway cavalcade to showcase the costumes for all to see. In the end each grade level winner was awarded a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card, but everyone would agree the best prize was won by all as we gained a new appreciation of all the many facets of a good book.

*Be sure to visit the photo gallery to see pictures of all the fun!

Be sure to visit the photo gallery to view the winning doors and students!

Gator Fever

After an inspiring "Gatorland" Show back in May, Justin Freeman, now a third grade student, wasn't going to let Mr. Sikes show him up.  As you can see, Justin made it look easy as he was able to "Gator-done!" and wrangle right on the back of that alligator.  Justin and his family loved their visit to "Gatorland" and Orlando, Florida.  If any of you are ever in the Orlando area, stop in to see Tim, George and all our "Gatorland" friends.

Gatorland Visits Renaissance

The students of C.E.S. recently had an honored visitor all the way from Gatorland in Orlando, Florida to join in on the Renaissance celebration!  While he wasn't there in person, he "skyped in"  to make a challenge.  Tim Williams, Dean of Alligator Wrestling, challenged the students to do their best and improve their test scores on their upcoming CRCT testing....AND if they met this challenge, he would not only see that Principal-Jeff Sikes would wrestle an alligator, but he would also bring some of his "alligator friends"  from Gatorland for a visit on May 16 to Chickamauga! Although a bit reluctant, Principal Sikes agreed that he would indeed wrestle an alligator for his students if they would promise to do their best.  Everyone is so excited to welcome our May 16 visitors and to see Mr. Sikes take on an alligator....after all what could possibly go wrong?

Be sure to make plans to join the students on May 16 at Oakwood Baptist Church Auditorium for this live show.  All the excitement begins at 8:30 A.M.. Hope to see you there!

STOP....Don't LITTER!!!!

STOP….Don’t Litter!

Recently the Kindergarten and first grade classes were treated to a great “Anti-Litter” presentation from the Chickamauga Women’s Club.  Ms. Joyce Harrison and Ms. Eulene Matthews shared an entertaining skit of the woes of not taking appropriate care of the litter we must deal with on a daily basis.  Everyone agreed that helping The Chickamauga Women’s Club keep Chickamauga Beautiful is something we can all do.  Thanks, Ladies for reminding us that together we can accomplish great things.
