Clarifying Information CCS Seal

Just to clarify information, I wanted to post what occurred at school today. At approximately 1:30 this afternoon we had a report that there had been a shooting in Wallaceville and the shooter had left the scene.  We were also given a description of the vehicle.  There was no indication which direction the suspect was headed, but to take every precaution, we decided to cancel outside recess and break for students.  We still had one more class-change at the middle school, but administrators were outside and checking the area before students were released to their next class.  We were never in a true lock down situation---it was a “soft lockdown”—basically school continued as usual, but students were not allowed outside the building.

Eclipse Information CCS SEAL

Parents,

Chickamauga City Schools will be following a half day schedule Monday, August 21, in an effort to ensure the safety and well-being of students.  While we have enjoyed activities and studying about the eclipse, we will dismiss students early so they can safely travel home before the eclipse begins.  The peak of the eclipse, when we will have 98% darkness, is during the regular dismissal time.  We want to avoid exposing students to driving at that time.  We have provided safety information about watching the eclipse, and stressed that looking at the eclipse without protective eye gear can cause permanent damage to the eyes.  Additionally, regular sunglasses will not protect your eyes from the danger of the eclipse.  This is a once in a lifetime event, but we strongly advise watching it on television rather than taking a chance on damaging your vision for a lifetime.

Message from Superintendent Day:

Since the weather is soooo hot and also since we are going to have to park our high school students at Dan McNally Field for the first month or so of school and have them walk over to the high school, I have decided to allow students to wear shorts to school (and staff to wear no ties) until Oct. 7 which will be the last day of school before Fall Break.  I do not intend to surpass our typical practice of wearing shorts til Labor Day next year---just this one time due to the inconvenience of the construction.
Thanks,

GLHS Picnic/Tailgate Party

A message from Superintendent Day:

I want to personally thank the citizens of Chickamauga for taking the time to vote on the school bond issue—whether you voted yes or no.  There was a large turnout which indicates the voters were engaged, and I feel confident the outcome of the election is representative of the desire of the majority of the community.  I do feel the appropriate decision has been made to ensure our school system has a long future, and our students have safe, secure facilities that are efficient and effective.  Although there is tremendous emotion associated with this decision, I think it was made by asking, “What is best for the students?”  If we do that, I think we are always doing the right thing.

Tuition Rate for 2016-2017 School Year

The Board of Education has set the tuition rate for the 2016-2017 school year.  Out of city Georgia residents will pay $800 per student with a family maximum of $2,400.  The Board strives to keep the tuition rate in line with what a Chickamauga city resident will pay in property taxes for an average home.  Last summer the millage rate was raised to 14.25 mills so that the school system would not lose state equalization funding, but at that point in time the Board opted not to change the tuition rate a month before school started.  This increase will balance the county tuition rate to approximate the increase in property taxes the city residents received last year.  Hopefully, the advance notice of an increase for the upcoming school year will allow families the opportunity to budget their finances accordingly.  Tuition must be paid in full before students are allowed to attend any classes.

Proposed Millage Rate Increase

The City of Chickamauga Board of Education boasts one of the lowest millage rates in the State. Out of 180 school systems in Georgia, Chickamauga City was ranked 168 based on 2014 data. School systems are required to levy a minimum of 5 mills which is considered the “Local Fair Share,” or the local funds contributed toward the cost of the educational program. Since 2010, the millage rate has remained at 12.00 mills. The Board of Education intended to recommend holding the school tax at 12.00 mills for 2015. However, recent changes to Georgia Code requires an increase in the effective millage rate in order for the school system to continue receiving equalization funding from the state. Chickamauga’s schools now receive approximately $785,000 annually for equalization. The purpose is to equalize the educational opportunities across school districts by narrowing the gap between systems in terms of property tax wealth per pupil. The school system is in the bottom percentile for system wealth and operating without equalization funding would be very difficult, if not impossible.

CCS BOE: 2013 GSBA Quality Board

Congratulations to Chickamauga City Schools Board of Education for once again earning the GSBA Quality Board Status.

James Cameron “Camo” Scroggins

Cameron Scroggins

October 15, 1997-December 7, 2013

It is always difficult to lose a family member or friend, but when the person is so young and full of potential, it is especially devastating. Cameron was truly a role model for all. He gave only his best effort, was good and kind to all, and was unwavering in his faith.

Cameron was a true Trojan! The strength he exhibited throughout his lengthy illness was amazing, and he faced death with a calm and confident attitude. He told everyone that he didn’t want them to cry for him and that he was ready to go. He knew without a doubt he would be in a better place and no longer in pain. In his own words Cameron said,

“God has a bigger purpose for me.”

Let us all strive to emulate the qualities of this special young man. He will live on in our hearts and memories and is a true inspiration.

Cameron Scroggins will never be forgotten!
