Girls' golf team wins state championship
The GLHS Lady Trojan golf team won its second Class A state title in five years at The Lakes at Laura S. Walker state park in Waycross on May 5. Rachel Mason was the tournament's individual low medalist with an 83. Jorden Watson placed third individually with an 88. Christa Mariakis and Molly Ramsey also played for Gordon Lee, who finished nine strokes ahead of runner-up Ware County Magnet School.
The Lady Trojans' score of 171 was 32 shots lower than last year's third-place total.
2008 season updates
May 5 Rachel Mason shot a tournament-low 83 and Jorden Watson added an 88 to lead the Lady Trojans to the Class A state championship. Gordon Lee, who finished fifth in 2006 and third in 2007, won by nine strokes over Ware Magnet.
Apr 22 The Lady Trojans won their third straight Region 6-A championship, beating runner-up North Paulding by 36 shots. Rachel Mason was the tournament's low medalist, shooting a 95. Jorden Watson added a 97 for GLHS. The Trojans finished third, two strokes from a state-tournament berth. James Gaither was low man for Gordon Lee with a 91. Trey Clendenen and Bret Wooten had 94's and Ryan Spiess added a 95.
Apr 17 The boys' team finished its regular season by splitting a tri-match. Trey Clendenen led the Trojans with a 41, Ryan Spiess shot a 47, Taylor Sprayberry came in with a 49, and Bret Wooten had a 51. The girls defeated Dade County as Rachel Mason was low medalist with a 43. Christa Mariakis added a 51.
Apr 15 The Trojans and Lady Trojans both picked up wins over LFO, Rome, and Ridgeland. Trey Clendenen was low medalist with a 43. Bret Wooten had a 45, James Gaither shot a 46, and Ryan Spiess added a 48 for GLHS.
Apr 10 The boys' team defeated Southeast Whitfield and Ridgeland but was edged by LFO. Spencer Burns led GLHS with a 43. James Gaither had a 44, Trey Clendenen posted a 45, and Bret Wooten added a 47. The girls' team beat both LFO and Southeast Whitfield. Rachel Mason shot a 46 and Mary Margaret Neel had a 59 for the Lady Trojans.
Apr 7 The Lady Trojans finished second in the Calhoun Invitational. Rachel Mason was second individually with an 85. Jorden Watson added a 97 for GLHS. Trey Clendenen led the Trojans with an 80. Spencer Burns shot an 83, Bret Wooten had a 98, and Ryan Spiess carded a 99.
Mar 27 The boys' team was defeated by Dade County at Air Castle. Trey Clendenen and Spencer Burns led the Trojans with 42's. Bret Wooten added a 49 and Aubrey McKinley and James Gaither both shot 50's.
Mar 25 The Trojans defeated Ringgold and LFO at Windstone. Aubrey McKinley was low man for GLHS with a 44. Spencer Burns had a 45, Trey Clendenen shot a 46, and James Gaither added a 49.
Mar 18 Gordon Lee's boys lost to LaFayette 172-185 at Canyon Ridge. Spencer Burns was low medalist for the match with a 42. Trey Clendenen and Aubrey McKinley both shot 47, and James Gaither added a 49. The girls' team suffered its first lost of the season, also falling to LaFayette. Rachel Mason led the Lady Trojans with a 44 while Christa Mariakis added a 56.
Mar 12 The Trojans defeated Southeast Whitfield 166-207. Spencer Burns led GLHS with a 37. Trey Clendenen had a 41, James Gaither shot a 42, and Bret Wooten added a 46. The Lady Trojans also won over Southeast, 91-116, as Rachel Mason carded a 41 and Jorden Watson came in with a 50.
Mar 11 The boys' team beat Adairsville and Gordon Central but fell to Calhoun. Spencer Burns was low for GLHS with a 44. James Gaither shot a 46, Bret Wooten had a 47, and Trey Clendenen added a 48.
Mar 10 The Lady Trojans picked up a win over LaFayette. Rachel Mason had a 41 and Jorden Watson added a 43. The boys split with LaFayette and Ridgeland. The Trojans got a 44 from Spencer Burns while James Gaither and Trey Clendenen each had a 45. Aubrey McKinley shot a 47.
Mar 3 The Trojans opened their season with victories over LFO and Rome. James Gaither led GLHS with a 44. Trey Clendenen shot a 46, Spencer Burns had a 47, and Bret Wooten added a 51.
